ROOTS is a young adult emergency shelter that provides up to 45 guests per night, between the ages of 18-25, with a safe place to sleep, warm meals and other essential services. Volunteers are needed to help with operational tasks but most importantly volunteers will provide social support to the folks who stay here and build meaningful relationships. You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer with us.

In-shelter Morning+ Shift (5:00am-8:30am, Sun-Fri; 5am-9:30am Sat): Morning+ Volunteers will be in shelter each day from 5am-8:30am. Between 5am and 7am, Morning+ volunteers will do a walk-around of the shelter space every 10 minutes to monitor guest safety needs. During this time, Morning+ Volunteers will also sign guests in and out of restrooms and assist with guest laundry. From 7am-8:30am the Morning+ role will be identical to that of Morning Volunteer. Morning+ Volunteers will have staff support during each shift and will never be the only ones awake monitoring the shelter floor. However, this role is crucial in expanding our overnight coverage so that we can best support our guests throughout their entire time in shelter.

We require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift. Volunteers are free to bring in their own face masks or other PPE, and we can provide gloves and disposable face masks on-site. The wellbeing of our volunteers is of the utmost importance, and we only ask you to commit to volunteering if you are safely able to do so. Upon arriving to each shift your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Staff and guests are screened in the same way upon entering the space. We appreciate your understanding in this process.
